Songs of the Day: The Battle of the "Car Crash"

>> Monday, June 28, 2010

So, this is not so much a "song of the day" as it is a list of my two favorite songs titled Car Crash.

On one had you have a plea for a car crash. A last gasp of air screaming alive, shaking the numb tingle from the tips of the fingers. That pinch of non dreaming that stirs you awake.
"I wanna feel a car crash
I wanna feel a capsize
I wanna feel the bomb drop, the earth stop
'Til I'm satisfied
I wanna feel a car crash
'Cause I'm dyin' on the inside
I wanna let go and know
That I'll be alright, alright"

"Car Crash" by Matt Nathanson

On the other hand, you have, perhaps the saddest song I have ever heard. A song that I am at loss of words to describe. A deptiction of an accidnet that I pray is not real, that I beg is not true, and that I hope will never be. However, you cannot fault the blind love displayed in this song. I give you that Mike Grubbs.

"You're flat on your face
In a field fifty feet from a burning Cadillac
At least you were thrown clear
Cause I'm still stuck in here

I take off my shoes
I let the flames crawl up and burn right through me
I'm silent as a movie
I always thought you knew me' better
And so we burn silently
A silent light, a silent day
And so we burn silently
It just seems wrong"

"Car Crash" by Wakey!Wakey!

Song of the Day: "Sounds Like Hallelujah" by The Head and the Heart.

>> Sunday, June 27, 2010

Okay, so I started todays hunt for the song of the day by searching for awesomely bad 90's tracks. But then when on my new mini obsession, twitter (thank you Stevie), an amazing band I follow, that if you read this blog you will hopefully know by now too, The Civil Wars mentioned a local band that I am also having a mild love affair with. That prompted an abrupt right turn in my thinking. So, I scoured my resources (google, youtube, and vimeo) and found a great live version of one of my new all time favorite songs, this week.

This song is just one of those songs that sticks to your ribs. Just as soon as you fall into the melody, it tosses a left hook that is nothing short of a sucker punch, catching you totally off guard and bringing a new layer of pepperminty freshness to an already fresh song. All in all, its like three songs in one, and each one is nothing short of a revelation.
I have mentioned to several people that 2010 has fallen unbearably short in amazing music. Sure, there has been a couple quality albums, but only one spectacular (Wakey!Wakey!'s "Almost Everything I'd Wish I'd Said The Last Time I Saw You") but overall, the year has been a scattershot of ok. And, not to put pressure on the band, but I am putting a lot of eggs in their basket to resurrect the year.
(Photo stolen from the bands facebook page, I do not know the rights to this image)
This band is on the ups. They are releasing their LP this upcoming week. Pick it up, support local music. Support independent music! http://www.theheadandtheheart.com/

Also, if you have not already discovered them, check out The Civil Wars too. From their blog, they are on the tail end of wrapping up their full length as well.

If you want to know more about them just look here:
The Civil Wars were a Song of the Day. They were #2 on The Alphabet list "C". There were #4 song of the year, however, if I were to rewrite this today, they would be #2. They were the #2 EP of the year, as well as an Honorable Mention for their Live at Eddie's Attic record on my Year in Music Review. So, if The Civil Wars like something, its worth checking out.

Song of the Day: "Last Rights" by Damien Jurado

>> Saturday, June 26, 2010

This is a local guy (Seattle) who released a new album this year that I have yet to digest all the way. I'll hear one song and fall in love, and then another will make me want to chuck my precious iPod into the wall. I think I just need to develop a taste for his creative ideals. He is undoubtedly brilliant and a spectacular songwriter, but sometimes he hides behind veils of inorganic blustering.

But this song, from one of my favorite websites, Black Cab Sessions, is one of those songs that would make me fall in love in acout 2.78 seconds.

"Last Rights" by Damien Jurado

Song of the Day: "What To Say" by Born Ruffians

>> Tuesday, June 22, 2010

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs of the year. Plus, this video kinda kicks ass.

When I compose my Yearly Music Review, this will for sure be in my songs of the year, and I may even expand it even further to include best music videos that this will surely be apart of.

"What To Say" by Born Ruffians

Song of the Day: "Rio" by Hey Marseilles (Music Video)

>> Monday, June 21, 2010

I am not sure there has been a song or band mentioned more times on this blog than the one I am about to reshare with you right now. In fact, if you search my blog for the term "Hey Marseilles Rio" and it came up with 11 mentions, including a Song of the Day just back in March. But, I am willing break my no repeats rule to celebrate today and help spread the word.

Hey Marseilles has finally released a music video. Along with the "official" of their LP shortly, the world is about to find out what I have loved and championed for some time now. And I have to say, for once, its about damn time. There are a lot of bands that I find and keep secret. Some that I even feel betrayed by when they make their mark. But not this band. This is a band that I tell every music lover I know about. This is a band that I put on when the party starts to lull to luff the life back into the room. This is a band that will break my heart if they do not get their due. And, as a lowly blogger, I will do my part to get them there.

This is the perfect music video for the band. One shot, 4 scenes, and a party. (there is a great write up about the band the the video on Spinner.com. Check it out.)

Song of the Day: "Austere" by The Joy Formidable

>> Sunday, June 20, 2010

This is one of those songs that will get stuck in your head in the most uncomfortable of ways. and I love that quality. This album is really growing on me in unexpected ways. Give it a listen. let me know what you think.

"Austere" by The Joy Formidable

Song of the Day: "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World

>> Saturday, June 19, 2010

It's funny how some songs last and others just fade away. You can put this song on at anytime, and it will always be the perfect song for that moment. And someone will hear it and smile.

"The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World

Song of the Day: "Home" by Marc Broussard

>> Friday, June 18, 2010

This is one of my all time favorite songs I re-fell in love with the other night while making a mix cd for a friend.... even now, I have it playing, and I just stopped what I was writing and froze in the fog of rock.

If you choose not to listen to this song, you are a fucking idiot. Sorry to be so harsh, but I would be hard pressed to find ANYONE that would not find something to love about this track.

"You don't know nothing about this!"

"Home" by Marc Broussard

Song of the Day: "Tightrope" by Janelle Monae

>> Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Just so you know, I'm not all whiny rock all the time. I'm not all introspective lyrics all the time. Some times, I just want to jam the funk out.

"Tightrope" by Janelle Monae

Band of the Week: Mimicking Birds

>> Monday, June 14, 2010

Band of the Week: Mimicking Birds

I have been SEARCHING for a decent video for this 3 piece Portland band for months now. One of my favorite albums of the year, this band combines sorrowful/beautiful vocals, looped guitar licks, and haunting/stunning lyrics in a way that makes you feel feelings. The band emotes at you.

I think this record has a strong chance to not only make my best albums of the year list, but to sneak into the top 4 or 5.

Check the videos out below, all from the same in studio session at opbmusic. Normally, I try to vary it up some, but good recordings are hard to come by. I'm just super thankful that someone was smart enough to get this on film.

If my heart was a home, this music would be a home-wrecker.

"Home And Somewhere Else" (my personal favorite)

"Subsonic Words" (I love the lounge feel of this one)

"The Loop" (probably the song that will make them famous)

Songs of the Day: "Pencil Full of Lead" & "Coming Up Easy"

>> Sunday, June 13, 2010

So, if you read my post, A Year in Music: Best Albums of 2009: Look Back Part 2, then you know how I feel about Paolo Nutini's most recent album, Sunny Side Up. If you didn't, click the link, it's probably the best thing I'm capable of writing.

But to give you a proper taste of this amazing album, and to publicly apologize to Mr. Nutini for being bullheaded and not trusting his artistry, please watch below.

Both these songs are so vastly different, just imagine what the rest of the record holds.

I love the songs, but not sure about the videos.

Alphabet List: Letter G

>> Friday, June 11, 2010

Alright, alright you've probably been wondering where the Alphabet list had gone. Well, I'm not going to lie- the letter G depresses me. Here are the best picks I could find out of the limited G bands. Know a great G band? Send ideas our way!

1. Green Day (When I Come Around)
If you were a teenager in the 90's this song means something to you. Maybe your friends and you moshed to it live at a concert. Maybe you stole a winecooler and drank it out back while listening. Or, like me, it was your "song" with your boyfriend (shout out to Joey Winski). Either way, although Green Day doesn't move me like they once did I will forever have a special spot for Green Day (and for the true die hard fans that had the Sweet Children 45's like me). In a time when Manic Panic was your best friend this song will always bring back the memories.
Live at Woodstock

2. The Gits (Second Skin)
For those of you that really know me you know that I have always had a part of me that is Riot GRRRL. It started growing up as a teenager in Washington in the 90's and has never really left. The Gits, though not originally from Seattle, really found their stride there and received local and underground success particularely among the Seattle Grunge and Punk scenesters. The band was on their way to main stream success when the brutal murder of singer Mia Zapata tore the band apart. I remember her murder and attending subsequent Home Alive concerts/gatherings. The Gits were never the same and disbanded shortly after. This video from the Gits movie is called Second Skin- enjoy!

3. Goo Goo Dolls (Iris)
Admit it, no matter how cheesy Goo Goo Dolls can be you still sing along when John Rzeznik starts in to the chorus with "and I don't want the world to see me..." This was the best embeddable vid I could find but check out youtube to see a really great one of them playing live in the pouring rain- rad.

4. Garbage (Only Happy When It Rains)
Yea Shirley Manson! That girl rocks! Guess who went out and bought fishnet stockings and big "Daria" black combat boots after this. No, not Adam. What people don't know about Garbage is that, yes Shirley Manson is awesome, but there are actually other members of the band people! And one just happened to produce this little known album called Nevermind of a small grunge group called - okay you know this- well his name is Butch Vig, so check him out.

5. Guns N Roses (November Rain)
Theres not a person I know that won't sing along at a dirty bar while Sweet Child O' Mine or Paradis City comes on. Legitimately though, I love November Rain. I even considered walking down the aisle to it but I think Kyle would have veto'd that idea right away (we ended up walking back up to the acoustic version of Everlong by Foo Fighters). An awesome video, an awesome guitar solo by slash, and maybe the best 9 minute video I know. By the way, perhaps the only time I think smoking is cool but when Slash is at the wedding smoking and hands the priest the rings- brilliant. Note there is a blink and you'll miss it cameo of Riki Rachtman!

6. Good Charlotte (The Anthem)
Catchy, poppy and yet they're dressed as... punks? gangstas? goths? I'm not sure. Still I can sing along to like 6 of there songs so here they are.

7. Ginuwine (Pony)
He can dance. He has the hottest body. The song is sexy. Nuf said.

8. Gorillaz (Clint Eastwood)
Before I had even heard music by Gorillaz I had heard about Damon Albarn's new project (although they tried to keep members secret for a while- remember that?)Although I like Blur better, Gorillaz brought something different to a time when music was kind of in a lull (1998).

9. Gomez (See The World)
So Gomez the band isn't new but I've just started to pay them attention. My husband has noted that they're somewhat inconsistent (perhaps due to having three singers and 4 songwriters?) but this song is beautiful.

10. Goldfinger (Here in My Bedroom)
'94 brought about a lot of great moments in music and this ska/punk was one of the best of it's genre.

Just take a listen!

Song of the Day: Fanfarlo "I'm a Pilot"

>> Wednesday, June 9, 2010

So I've been reading this book This is Your Brain on Music and so far it's fascinating. I'm hoping to discover why we are drawn to certain kinds of music and can't let go of those songs we've loved since high school. There is something so new and yet reminiscent to me about "Im A Pilot" and yet I can't place my finger on it. I adore it. It's shadowy, dark and light. Maybe you'll find your place in this song too?

Song of the Day: "The Darkest Side" by The Middle East

>> Tuesday, June 8, 2010

You can bet on this song placing itself firmly in the top ten on my songs of the year list when its all said and done. Simply, just beautiful.

Haunting. Stunning. Heartbreaking. Lovely.

If you listen to one song, make it this one, it will change everything.

"The Darkest Side" by The Middle East

Song of the Day: "Excuses" by The Morning Benders

>> Monday, June 7, 2010

So, I was up late a couple nights back, and I caught the end of Last Call with Carson Daly, and there was this great clip of The Morning Benders live in concert. Now, I've had this album for a bit, but it has not grown on me, but this clip, full of personality, made me want to like the album. And any edge is an edge, you know? So, watch, enjoy, and spread.

"Excuses" by The Morning Benders

Band of the Week: Samantha Crain

>> Sunday, June 6, 2010

So, I went to a show last night to see First Aid Kit, and although they did not disappoint, they did not completely impress either. However, I was abnormally impressed with an opening act. I walked into The Vera Project a fan of First Aid Kit, and walked out a fan of Samantha Crain. She stands as tall as her guitar, she is small in stature, however, her voice towers a good 9 feet tall. I cannot stress enough how much power and beauty she filled the room with.

Oh, and she substituted an electric guitar (band mate quit before the show) with a kazoo. And it worked, well.

Here are some examples of the aweness. You can say you heard her first when she is everywhere next years.
Her new album comes out on Tuesday. Buy it. Support independent music!!!

Band of the Week: Samantha Crain
(and The Midnight Shivers)
Her new album is just under her name alone, and she mentioned a band member leaving, So I am not quite sure on the official name.

A Year in Music: Best Albums of 2009: Look Back Part 2.

A Year in Music: Best Albums of 2009.
I am going to do a quarterly revisit of my best of the year albums. I am doing this, in part because, it is funny how albums stay the same as you change. You realize that overtime you are listening to some albums more than others, and some you are not listening to at all after the luster wears off. But also, upon reviewing my previous best of lists, I would change so much in retrospect. So, this is to document how my mind is evolving throughout the year.

Below you will see the albums ranked in their new order with the original ranking in parentheses. You will also see my original introduction for this list, as well as each original review listed as they were back when first posted. I have put my updated thoughts from March in a lovely shade of
lilac, and my insights from June in a manly shade of green.
First and foremost I need to ask for forgiveness for my absence from this glorious blog. I have been devoid of a computer for the last 6 months and the itch to write nearly killed me. So, you have my profoundest and sincerest apologies. With that in mind, I fear that my ability for string coherent words together to form witty one-sided banter may be a bit on the rusty side, so bear with me while I gain my bearings.
This year, for the first time in many years, seemed insignificant. One day bled into the next until this year felt like last. Stretching within my own confines proved to be a fruitless task, this year was doomed to be nothing special, static, and forgettable. Understand, this is not a bad thing; quite possibly, it is something to celebrate. No news is good news. My life, for the first time in years, was dramaless and boring. Dramaless and boring, is great for one thing. Losing oneself in those true inner passions. Rediscovering exactly how discovering something feels. This was my year in music. A year of discovery. And it was bountiful.
In 2009 I purchased a total of 144 albums and EP’s, 58 of which were actually released between November of 2008 and December of 2009. That is 58 new recordings from this year alone that made this year anything but forgettable. And, yes, I did, purchase all of these. And yes, this is where all my money goes. It’s better than a drug habit, although, sometimes it’s hard to know the difference.
As 2008 progressed, I took a noticeable step away from my standard singersongwriter persona. I started to really appreciate music that took real chances. Music that tried something new and of value. Leaning more and more towards the Los Campesinos! and The Dodos of the world, I started to purchase records I never would have considered two years ago. This was just the start of a hell of a journey.
This year was about taking chances in safe places, between the left and right side of storytelling headphones. I hope you enjoy. I will do a quarterly review of this list to track the changes that are sure to follow.

My Up and Coming Music List. Updated. Again.

Originally written on 4/24. Updated on 5/20. Since that time, I have indeed wasted more money. I have updated this list. I have also reformatted this list. Looking back I was composing it on paper the same way the titles rest in my head, but, that only really makes sense to me. So, I have broken the records down into easily digestible categories.

Inspired by Stevie's Up And Coming Book List, I am going to start the same thing with my music purchased for the year. My favorite blog to write is my year end music review. And it be honest, I start it in January of each year. I start collecting music as soon as possible, and use a smart playlist to amass them all in one place for easy listening and examining. As we stand on 6/61, I have purchased 58 albums from 2010 (including records released after 10/1/2009 to today. How am I expected to judge an album in less than three months? It's impossible. So the last 3 months are tagged on to the next year.) That is 20 more records added to this list since 4/24. Thats less than 2 months. This is an issue that may actually be a compulsion. This is depressing, yet joyful. Anyways....

Below you will see a quick list of the albums I have picked up so far this year. I will try to update them every month or so. If I have an opinion of the record, will post a quick note, but keep in mind, I may change mine.

Surefire. Albums that will absolutely make my year end list.
1. First Aid Kit - "The Big Black and The Blue" AMAZING. I LOVE THIS RECORD. I have since purchased the whole catalog and will be seeing them on 6/5.
2.
Frightened Rabbit - "The Winter of Mixed Drinks" Very Very Good.
3.
Girls - "Album" Released last week of Sept. in 2009. This is the record I regret the most leaving off last years list. It is a hell of a record, and I am bending my Oct. rule to get it the attention it deserves.
4.
Local Natives - "Gorilla Manor" Surefire.
5.
Mimicking Birds - "Mimicking Birds" Top five as of today. Great, GREAT, album.
6.
Mumford & Sons – “Sigh No More” Great record.
7.
The Tallest Man On Earth - "The Wild Hunt" Surefire. Top three possible, top five probable.
8.
Wakey!Wakey! - "Almost Everything I Wish I'd Said The Last Time I Saw You...." The best record of the year so far. It's overtly poppy, but in an unobnoxious way. It is really wonderful. Songs like Car Crash and Dance So Good will surely be near the top of my best songs list.

Albums that are SO FAR very enjoyable, but have not gotten me excited…. Yet.
1. the bird and the bee – “Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates” This should NOT work. But it does, and it has a REAL chance to grow on me enough to make my list. If I ever make an ironic music list, this will be a shoo-in.
2.
Broken Bells - "Broken Bells" Recommended by Stevie's Mister, so far it’s a good pick up, need to cycle through a few more times.
3.
fun. “fun. Presents Selected Selections From Their First Full-length Album, Heretofore Known as, 'Aim and Ignite', Performed Acoustically Live At Fingerprints” Very Very good
4.
Janelle Monae – “The ArchAndroid” Too new to judge. But there are a few spectacular songs on this record.
5.
Matt Pond PA – “The Dark Leaves” Good, but kinda forgettable.
6.
The Middle East - "The Recordings of the Middle East EP" Nice so far but, too new to judge.
7.
The Morning Benders - "Big Echo" Pretty good. Need more spins.
8.
One-Eyed Mule – “Drifting to a Happy Place” So far, so good. Very Excited to see where this record takes me.
9.
Portugal. The Man - "American Ghetto" Very good record with great potential.
10.
Trent Dabbs - "Your Side Now" Very solid singersongwriter stuff. Might really grow on me. Hasn’t so far.
11.
She & Him - "Volume Two" Borderline, but probable.
12.
Vampire Weekend - "Contra" When I first picked this up, I thought it was too much the same. But now that I have run it through more than a few times, I am starting to love it.
13.
Wale - "Attention Deficit" Very good. So far, the best hip-hop of ‘10
14.
Yeasayer - "Odd Blood" Strange fucking record that I am really really liking. This album may not make the list, but it may have my two favorite songs of the year so far. But, do two songs make a record?

I really like, but probably will get less enjoyable with repeated listens.
1. The Album Leaf - "A Chorus of Storytellers" Falling From the Sun is a hell of a song, have not absorbed the rest of the record yet.
2.
Horse Feathers – “Thistled Spring” Very relaxed record. Great to just shut your eyes too.
3.
Jeff Jacobson - "Lunch in the Park" This should be forgettable, its run of the mill singersongwriter stuff, but I never change the song when shuffle stumbles onto this. Ithink I like it.
4.
Little & Ashley - "Stole My Heart EP" This is the music behind those adorable amazon kindle commercials. Very cute indie pop.
5.
Nick Jaina - "A Bird In The Opera House" This is really growing on me.
6.
Peirson Ross – “Reverse & Ready – Side B – EP” Forgetable.
7.
Sad Brad Smith - "Love Is Not What You Need" SOLID

Eh, Alright, has an outside shot.
1. Adam Green (from The Moldy Peaches) - "Minor Love" Pretty good, like Mike Doughty lite. I think if he took himself more seriously, so would I.
2.
Beach House - "Teen Dream" Borderline and fading. People really seem to love this, so I might have to give it a closer listen.
3.
Dum Dum Girls - "I Will Be" Still too new to judge. Couple GREAT tracks, but a few tracks do not make a record.
4.
The Dutchess & The Duke - "Sunset/Sunrise" Slipping from very good to…eh.
5.
Fang Island - "Fang Island" Why the hype? Nothing special so far.
6.
Jason Castro - "Jason Castro" Former American Idol singersongwriter needs to continue to grow. Not a bad release, but a little immature.
7.
The Joy Formidable – “A Balloon Called Moaning” Interesting, but unsure of where it fits in
8.
Julian Casablancas - "Phrazes For The Young" Interesting, but unsure.
9.
Justin Nozuka - "You I Wind Land And Sea" If I was in an unhealthy place in my life. If I was heavily depressed or sedated, I would LOVE this record. But I think I am too content for it. It is good, but very depressing.
10.
Los Campesinos! - "Romance is Boring" This was my most anticipated release of the year, but the band has lost something for me. Do not get me wrong, this is a good recording, with some great individual songs. But this is not a great record. Not like their first two. Not sure if it will make my list, which is shocking to me.
11.
Mike Doughty - "Sad Man Happy Man" Little disappointing, except for the bonus tracks and covers.
12.
Surfer Blood - "Astro Coast" Purchased today. I texted KGB and asked, "What is the best album of the year so far?" and Surfer Blood was what they told me, so I buy.Just alright. Damn KGB.
13.
Sweetheart 2010 - Various Artists. Quality all the way through. Likes of Hey Marseilles, Spoon and Jose Gonzalez.

Have not listened enough to gain a usable opinion.
1. Band Of Horses – “Infinite Arms”
2. Bear In Heaven – “Beast Rest Forth Mouth”
3. The Big Pink – “A Brief History Of Love”
4. Born Ruffians “Say It”
5. Broken Social Scene – “Forgiveness Rock Record”
6. Colonies – “Thirty Thousand”
7. Drink Up Buttercup “Born and Thrown On a Hook”
8. Four Tet “There Is Love In You”
9. Greg Laswell “Take A Bow”
10. LCD Soundsystem – “This is Happening”
11. Mia Carruthers and The Retro's - "We Will Grow EP"
12. Murs & 9th Wonder – “Fornever” Still have not found that great hip-hop album of 2010.
13. The National – “High Violet”
14. Samantha Crain “You (Understood)” If the show she JUST put on at The Vera Project is any indication, this record could be very special.
15. Sleepy Sun – “Fever” & “Open Eyes EP”
16. Wakey!Wakey! – “Silent As a Movie (live) EP”

Just Flat Out Do Not Like
1. Bryan Scary & the Shredding Tears - "Mad Valentine" Don't like.
2.
The Magnetic Fields - "Realism" My least favorite of the year so far.
3.
South China - "Washingtons"Unimpressed for the most part. Almost always hit “next”
4.
Titus Andronicus - "The Monitor" When I heard indie rock themed around the Civil War I thought I could be very interesting. And it is interesting, just not very good.
5.
Toro Y Moi - "Causers Of This" Don’t really like.

Song of the Day: "Naked As We Came" by Iron & Wine

Just felt right. Stevie knows.

"Naked As We Came" by Iron & Wine

Band of the Week: Glen Phillips

>> Thursday, June 3, 2010

I feel both happy and sad when it comes to this guy. I feel alot of people missed the boat on him, which makes me frown, but I feel like for once, I got to keep one of my true musical treasures a secret, which almost never happens, so that makes me grin.

This former, and current front man of Toad The Wet Sprocket, put out a solo album in the early 00's that i still listen too on a semi regular basis. Which, for my music collection, is an impressive feat. His songs are direct and simple, but the layers are there, the heart in the timber of his voice is so pronounced it can almost be hard not the be affected by it, even after the 100th listen. Give this guy a go. Pick up his work, from his 3 solo albums, to the Toad stuff, as well as his side projects, Mutual Admiration Society and Work Progress Administration.
I would recommend his solo work personally, especially his first Abulum, which sits at number 13 on my best albums of all time list and number 15 on the best albums of the decade, which is interesting in itself. Shows you that a few REALLY good records came out in the last couple years of the decade.

Anyways, Enjoy.
